Our history.....
In 1881, Central Presbyterian Church came to the rescue of a small group of worshipers on the south side of Terre Haute. Central assumed the mortgage for this group's property on the corner of 3rd and Moffitt. A congregation was founded in 1884, and the cornerstone of their new building on Moffitt and 6th Street was laid in 1892. Moffitt was renamed Washington Avenue, giving birth to Washington Avenue Presbyterian Church.
In 1904, the Pastor of Central Presbyterian Church felt the need for a mission on the fast growing east end of Terre Haute. A Sunday school was organized with classes in a tent at the southeast corner of 25th Street and Wabash Avenue. In 1905, a small brick chapel was erected on the back half of the lot at 2200 Wabash Avenue. Rapid growth of the new church family resulted in laying the corner stone of a new church building in 1925, giving birth to Westminster Presbyterian Church.
In March of 2000, members of Westminster and Washington Avenue joined to form Unity Presbyterian Church.
Our future.....
We are dreaming big! We purchased 12 acres at 1207 E. Springhill Dr. In October of 2001 we dedicated the land to the nurturing of peacemakers. Upon selling both historic properties, a ground-breaking ceremony took place May 18, 2003 for our new building. July 4, 2004 was our first worship service in our new facility which is phases I of our building plans - a Fellowship Center. Plans are underway for building phases II by 2009.
In the meantime, the life of the Church thrives! Be sure to check this website for Bible study, fellowship and service opportunities. The table is set and there is always room for you!
